An interesting mechanic here is that rather than get different weapons and armour, you instead find the same ones repeatedly, however when you do it levels up the item itself, and the stat boosts it offers, meaning your gear almost always remains useful as you progress through the game.Ĭat Quest has some charming art and animation going into it that remains very consistent throughout. On that note there is a lot of different equipment throughout the game, from mage gear that boosts your magical attacks, to joke suits of armour like a cardboard box that offers no protection whatsoever. The dodge rolling is very forgiving, with plenty of invincibility frames, and in general combat is quite fun, if a little mindless, especially once you start getting higher level equipment. You also can evade attacks by dodge rolling, and enemy attacks are all shown with an area of effect warning to denote how far away you need to get to be safe. You can launch melee attacks in a combo or cast a variety of spells with areas of effect and the usual status afflictions like ice making enemies slower or fire doing burn damage over time. There are a lot of different quests that you can, and sometimes have to, take on that will take you all over the map, however you always have a quest marker dictating where you need to go, meaning regardless of the content of the quest you really are just moving to a point on the map, reading dialogue, and then either going somewhere else or engaging in a fight.Ĭombat in Cat Quest is all done in real time, with enemies appearing on the map and in dungeons and attacking you. Every dungeon has a recommended level that is displayed when you approach, so you will know before you go in what sort of difficulty to expect. Dotted all over the maps are towns and dungeons, towns being areas that you can rest at, and take a variety of quests from notice boards, and dungeons being small single level areas filled with monsters and treasure.
There are some areas that are fenced off at first, but as you progress in the story you gain abilities like water walking and flight to allow you to access them, and by the end of the game you have complete freedom to travel over the entire map.

A lot of the quests you take on in the game develop over time, with a side story thread running over sometimes as many as 7 or 8 individual quests, although again these commonly prioritise the punchline over the plot which may not sit well with some people, especially when the punchline amounts to a cat pun of some form.Ĭat Quest takes place on a relatively large world map that you have almost free reign to explore from the start. What clearly takes priority is the over-abundance of cat puns and references and story beats from other, more notable RPGs and forms of media. The key threat of the game is that dragons have returned to the world, and you, as one of the Dragonblood, an ancient race of cats infused with dragon magic, must travel around and slay them in order to open the path to Drakoth himself. Together you venture across Felingard, journeying to different towns and settlements to help the locals with a huge variety of quests to level up and unlock stronger equipment. Right at the start of the game your sister is kidnapped by a mysterious figure named Drakoth, and you awake on a beach with a fairy named Spirry by your side. The plot of Cat Quest is about as barebones, stock RPG plot as you can get – You play a nameless hero in the land of Felingard, a land completely populated by sentient cats.
From the extremely small Singapore-based development team, The Gentlebros, this is the delightfully silly Cat Quest… After storming back in with a run of horror games, or at the very least games for a more mature audience, I figured I needed a break from the bleak and the macabre, and so I blasted through a bright, happy, and downright punny little indie game on the Switch over the last week.
